The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information has partnered with the Bigga brand of the Wisynco Group to roll out a social media campaign targeting secondary-school students.
This is to sensitise Jamaican children to the issues surrounding public postings on social media.
The campaign will be executed under the theme ‘Social Aware, Share with Care’.
The campaign, which will include a tour of several selected secondary schools across the island, is scheduled to start on September 25. Meanwhile, September 29 has been declared ‘Check Yourself Social Awareness Day’.
A bulletin issued by the Ministry states that children utilise social media as a way of advertising and promoting personal information or information about others, which may have far-reaching impact on the character or life of an individual.
Level of awareness
Therefore, Wisynco has developed a campaign to increase the level of awareness in students and to encourage responsible interaction on social media.
Several activities, such as rap sessions and entertainment, will be used as conduits to make students more aware of the ‘dos and don’ts’ of social media and the sharing of information on the phone.
The Ministry is encouraging schools that have been selected to be part of the programme to support this important and relevant initiative to educate and protect children from the ills of social media.
